Beyond the Announcement: Why Some Stories Deserve a Moment

Every week, The Peacock Group's eight PR professionals come together to talk through our clients’ priorities for the week. Whether it's a media pitch we're preparing to send, a thought leadership opportunity we're developing or a major milestone we're helping a client bring to life, our team collaborates on the best approach to meet each client's goals.

Before we dive into the strategies and tactics for each client engagement, we start by getting to the heart of their story. As we do this, one question always rises to the top: How can we tell this story better?

Sometimes the answer is a strong media pitch or a strategically placed thought leadership piece. But sometimes, the story deserves something bigger than an announcement. It deserves a moment.

Recently, our team partnered with Lexicon to celebrate two major milestones: the unveiling of one of the nation's most advanced robotic welding systems at its Prospect Steel facility in Blytheville and the grand opening of its newly renovated corporate headquarters in Little Rock. Both announcements could have lived solely as news releases. But instead, our team capitalized on the business importance of each, creating in-person events that brought people together, told a much bigger story and provided attendees with something they’ll never forget.

For the robotics expansion, event attendees saw innovation in action through a live demonstration and facility tour. In fact, during the tour, the robot welded an embossed Lexicon logo in the center of a steel I-beam. As attendees took in this one-of-a-kind experience in person, they got to hear how the investment will strengthen manufacturing, workforce development and Arkansas's role in the future of steel fabrication.

At the headquarters celebration, we decided to host two events, a ribbon cutting and community open house, with both welcoming local leaders, clients, partners, neighbors and employees into the new space. One of the activities we included was an Employee Ownership Wall where all Lexicon employee-owners had the opportunity to sign one of the prominent walls in the newly expanded space. In addition to creating a unique, Lexicon-branded visual, it also served as a physical representation of the company’s recent transition to an ESOP (Employee Stock Ownership Plan). Attendees at both events were able to see this wall, ask questions about its meaning and understand the company's continued investment in its people and its home state.

Those experiences created connection and community — something a press release alone could never do.

At TPG, we often talk about the idea of unreasonable hospitality, a philosophy popularized by restaurateur Will Guidara. While it originated in the hospitality industry, we think it has a strong application to public relations. Going above and beyond means creating a more meaningful experience for the people who matter most.

Strategic events transform milestones into shared experiences and get to the heart of what we do as storytellers. They give media compelling visuals, create authentic storytelling opportunities for executives, invite community leaders, elected officials and industry partners to become part of the story and create space for people to connect in ways they simply can't through a piece of paper. Just as importantly, they celebrate the employees whose hard work made the milestone possible. A ribbon cutting for a new building allows us to honor both the people who built it and the community it was built to serve.

In an era when AI can draft content in seconds, experiences have become even more valuable. Technology can help tell a story, but it can't replace the pride an employee feels when showing what they’ve built, the conversations sparked during a facility tour or the relationships strengthened through a shared celebration.

We'll always believe the best communications strategies start with people. When you focus on the story first, the tactics become clearer and the moments become more memorable.
